Vessel collisions with large marine animals — primarily cetaceans, sea turtles, and large pelagic fish. The leading direct anthropogenic mortality source for several large whale species.
Mechanisms
- Bow-strike on surfacing animals — most common with bulk carriers and
container ships moving >14 knots.
- Propeller strikes — typically smaller vessels, often non-fatal but cause
long-term injury (visible scarring on most adult North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis)).
- Fast ferries and recreational craft in coastal habitats.
Most affected (in the vault)
- Blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) — vessel routes overlap migratory
corridors off North America and the Mediterranean.

approaches.
Mitigation
Speed restrictions in seasonal management areas (e.g. Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary), routing changes, and acoustic monitoring are the documented effective interventions.
