The primary freshwater occurrence source in doriiOS. GBIF complements OBIS — Ocean Biodiversity Information System for river, lake, wetland, and aquarium-adjacent taxa that are thin or absent in marine-first indexes.
Access
- Occurrence search API:
https://api.gbif.org/v1/occurrence/search -
used for compact, index-first app-ready freshwater samples.
- Bulk downloads:
https://api.gbif.org/v1/occurrence/download/request -
authenticated, DOI-producing archives for approved bulk jobs only.
- Credentials: bulk requests read
GBIF_USERNAME, GBIF_PASSWORD, and
GBIF_EMAIL from the environment. Secrets are never written to manifests.
Fields used

Freshwater notes
Compact GBIF samples are scouting evidence, not abundance estimates. Treat issues, coordinate coverage, dataset count, and recent-year concentration as quality signals before planning authenticated bulk downloads.
