The water column of the open ocean — anywhere not on the seafloor or attached to coast. A pelagic species lives suspended in open water. Contrast with benthic (seafloor-associated) and demersal (near-bottom but mobile). Most whales, sharks, tuna, and mantas are pelagic; corals and crabs are not.
